PART 3
1. Why do you think some people like doing new things?
2. What problems can people have when they try new activities for the first time?
3. Do you think it’s best to do new things on your own or with other people? Why?
4. What kinds of things do children learn to do when they are very young? How important are these things?
5. Do you think children and adults learn to do new things in the same way? How is their learning style different?
6. Some people say that it is more important to be able to learn new things now than it was in the past. Do you agree or disagree with that? Why?

PART 3
1. Why do you think some people like doing new things?
I think that a lot of people just want to experience something new — something different. Perhaps they think that it makes their lives more fun. Sometimes, doing something new with a person can strengthen your relationship with them. For example, some people do bungee jumping with their boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife.
I believe that some people like to try new things because it is a good way to meet new people — make new friends. It also gives them the chance to find out if they are good at something. My younger brother enjoys computer games, but I never really like them. Sometimes he’ ll alsosuggest that we try a new puzzle game together. I find it more interesting, so we play it often and are both pretty good at it.
2. What problems can people have when they try new activities for the first time?
I think the main problem is that they might not understand the rules of the activity — a game for example. In that situation, they are likely to make mistakes. A lot of more experienced people might forget what it was like for them the first time they tried the activity and criticise the beginner.
One problem they may have is that they are not familiar with the equipment they are using. This means that it is essential for more experienced people to be around if there is any danger in the activity, with children in particular. People who already know the activity well might laugh at the beginner, lowering their confidence in their ability to do the activity.
3. Do you think it’ s best to do new things on your own or with other people? Why?
I think it’ s best to try something new on your own at first. Then you can make any basic mistakes in private and get some practice before trying the activity with, or in front of, other people. Doing this might be better for a person’ s self- confidence.
I think it’ s better to try something new with other people, especially if those people are also beginners. In my experience, in such situations, the people trying something for the first time can work together and laugh together when they do something wrong or make mistakes. Of course, it is generally a good idea to have at least one experienced person in the group so that they can show new people what to do.
4. What kinds of things do children learn to do when they are very young? How important are these things?
There are so many things! Children learn to play games. They also learn songs, fairy stories and nursery rhymes. I think it is important for children to learn these things because they are part of a child’ s culture. These are also things that they can learn in groups, so it can help them to make friends with other children.
When children are very young, they learn to communicate with other people. They learn language — how to speak and how to write. They also learn some artistic skills, like drawing and painting. That’ s great, because it is something that they generally enjoy and it is something that is a nice skill to have.
5. Do you think children and adults learn to do new things in the same way? How is their learning style different?
Yes, I do. I think that adults often think that they do things differently to children, but they don’ t. People of all ages learn by copying others and through practice. This is how children and adults learn languages, for example. They can even learn together, as my friends and their daughter did when they were learning English.
Although children and adults often learn to do new things in the same way, there might be some differences. For example, I think that children are more likely to ask for help if they have trouble doing something new. Adults often find this embarrassing. In addition, many children don’ t seem as concerned about danger when they try new things, such as skiing.
6. Some people say that it is more important to be able to learn new things now than it was in the past. Do you agree or disagree with that? Why?
I disagree. I think it has always been important to be able to learn new things. Of course, to some extent, the new things that we learn nowadays are different to the new things people learn in the past. The ability to use technology like computers and mobile phones is an obvious example.
I think that nowadays it is much more important to be able to learn new things, because society is developing and changing so quickly and in so many different ways. People who have trouble learning new things might find it more difficult to compete with others, in the workplace for example.
