The pie charts provide three different commodity transportation modes such as canals, roads, and railways in a European country in 100 years in three different periods of 1800, 1850, and 1900.

Overall, there’s been a big change in the trend. Canals which were the most popular in 1800 turned out to take a descending trend in the transportation of good during the entire period while railways which were the least popular mode in 1800 saw a big jump in 1850 and finally took the lion share of 70% in 1900.

In 1800, goods were mostly shipped through canals. It constituted 66% of transportation mode while roads recorded 30%, and railways stood at the negligible number of 2% only. However, within 50 years, some dramatic changes in transportation trend happened. In 1850, 50% of goods were transported through railways, roads dropped to 20%, and canals was reduced to more than half, hitting 30% of transportation mode.

In 1900, railways dominated the trend by recording 70%, roads were almost stable by shrinking to 15%, and canals saw another drop to record 15% only. So, the most dramatic changes in transportation mode were experienced in canals and railways.
