4月11日,ETS在北京召开了全球发布会,宣布了托福考试全新升级的消息,托福考试迎来全面改革!
自2023年7月26日起, 托福iBT考试的时长将由3小时缩短至2小时以内,取消考试中的10分钟休息时间。其中改革比较多就是托福写作,可以用2个关键字抓住改革的精髓:“短”和“学术”。
►关键字1:“短”:
改革之前要求在30分钟内完成至少300字的独立写作,而现在只要求100字,当然时间也缩短到10分钟。
表面上看,输出速度没有变化,都是10字/分钟。但是,构思慢的学生要小心了。之前完全可以用10分钟构思,再用20分钟写作。现在必须“短平快”:2分钟内读完教授的邮件和学生留言,然后形成自己的思路,马上动笔,绝 对不能拖泥带水。
►关键字2:“学术”:
旧版托福写作有一些接地气的题目,比如《你愿意在家吃饭,还是去饭店?》。问的是个人偏好(Personal Preference)。考生不需要有什么知识储备,只要有生活常识和基本英文能力就能交出一份答案。即便是低龄考生和脱离学校很久的社会人士也可以得到不错的分数。
改革后的题目会“高冷”很多。比如一道样题问你:在过去的两个世纪,推动人类社会进步的最重要的发明是什么?题目还规定你不许讲电脑和手机。ETS示范的满分答卷讨论了“疫苗和抗生素”。但是仔细想想,这要求考生(1)了解科技进步史;(2)有话题词汇储备,比如vaccine, antibiotic, lifespan, pathogen。显然,学术讨论不是仅靠常识就能hold住的。

An effective response will contain at least 100 words. You will have 10 minutes to write it.

As I discussed in the class, many businesses and companies offer working chances for part-timers. There is a newly emerging way— job sharing. Job sharing is a type of part-time employment in which one position can be shared by two part-time workers, thus obtaining more flexibility, but some argue that this working style may arise many problems, since it is too difficult for employers to administrate all the part-timers. In your opinion, should job-sharing be encouraged? Or should it be limited considering its drawbacks. Why do you
believe this?

I believe it is very beneficial to have job-sharing. that is, the two people share the work, hours, and pay of one job. Job sharing opens more opportunities to people who have other responsibilities, especially for those who need to take care of their children or who want to pursue their further study. Job-sharing offers them more flexible working hours.

I disagree. When pay is shared, such work can not offer enough income. Without incentives, employees cannot perform well during their work, and therefore it is hard to ensure the working quality. For another, flexibility not only means more freedom but also tends to result in much pressure since they should do many things at the same time.
Sharing the same position with others can ramp up staff productivity to a large degree. For one thing, it is an indisputable fact that nobody can have a panoramic view of the truth of the tasks due to the limited experience and knowledge span, so it is the collaboration between two employees that creates opportunities to view the task from more than one angle and to approach it in several ways. Under this circumstance, workers will deliver a brand new perspective and make us have a second thought of our own viewpoint. In other words, the clashes of different views will temper and refine our opinion about task,thereby creating the optimal method to accomplish tasks assigned by bosses. After discussing, we can pick out the optimal method ,thereby creating a more balanced and efficient solution. On the contrary, if working alone, people, especially when we are not apt at the task, will be nonplussed over the task, thus slowing down working efficiency.
