　　In the past, many people had skills such as making their own clothes and doing repairs to things in the house. In many countries, nowadays, skills like these are disappearing. Why do you think this change is happening? How far is this situation true in your country?

　　In the past, people would usually make their own clothes or make repairs around the home themselves, but this is less common nowadays in my country. In this essay, I shall suggest why this might be the case.

　　One reason may be that these skills have not been passed on from one generation to the next. In the past, children spent fewer years at school, so they would probably have had more time to learn skills from their parents. Nowadays, there is more of a focus on academic qualifications, to suit the needs of the modern economy. However, in my country, handicrafts and home repairs are still taught at schools and many students learn them after leaving secondary school.

　　Another reason might be that some things, such as home repairs, require more skill than in the past. Therefore,many people may prefer to hire a specialist rather than attempt the work themselves. At the same time, people may decide that their time is better spent on other things, such as their own work. In my country, it is common for people to do some repairs or other work themselves, but to use a person with specialist knowledge for more complex work. For example, many people put up shelves by themselves, but get an electrician to rewire their homes.

　　Another factor could be cost. Nowadays, in my country, people have greater disposable incomes, so they can afford to pay someone else to do work for them. In the past, this was not possible for most people. Many people who do the work themselves nowadays do it as a hobby, so the cost of hiring someone is not the issue for them. To summarize, there are several reasons why people might not make their own clothes or make repairs in their own homes nowadays. However, in my country, many people still do them, for a variety of reasons. (316 words)
