adj. 平凡的,每日的

Train and plane spotting are regarded as eccentric precisely because they make a fetish of something quotidian.

 

rebuttal

the speech act of refuting by offering a contrary contention or argument

n. 反驳;辩驳;反证

The rebuttal to this actually takes an entire book to convey, but it first involves helping people understand that everything about talent is a process.

recant

to publicly say that you no longer have an opinion or belief that you once had

vt. 放弃;撤回

We should recant all opinions which are in conflict with those proclaimed by the central leadership.

 

reclusive

withdrawn from society; seeking solitude

adj. 隐居的;隐遁的

Another character, Vida Winter, is England's most famous reclusive writer, whose life story is coming to an end.

 

reconcile

to find a way of making (two different ideas, facts, etc.) exist or be true at the same time

recondite

not understood or known by many people

Monetary policy is the most recondite yet most pervasive and powerful of economic forces.

 

redundant

1 : repeating something else and therefore unnecessary; 2 : Brit : dismissed from a job because you are no longer needed

adj. 多余的,过剩的;被解雇的

This word is redundant, it can be left out.

 

reluctant

feeling or showing doubt about doing something : not willing or eager to do something

adj. 不情愿的;勉强的;顽抗的

The UK government has always been strangely reluctant to spell out what is expected from its people.

 

render

1 to give (something) over to the control or possession of another usually under duress; 2 to make an exact likeness of; 3 to give a representation or account of in words

v. 致使;给予补偿;提出

The entire world is trying to either undermine your authority or render you obsolete

 

resignation

the feeling that something unpleasant is going to happen and cannot be changed

n.放弃;顺从

The German government, a 31% stakeholder in the company, has already accepted his resignation.

 

resigned

receiving or enduring without offering resistance

adj. 顺从的

The three other teachers had resigned as well.

 

resolute

very determined : having or showing a lot of determination

adj. 坚决的;果断的

This is why Chinese leaders have been so resolute in their drive to lock up supplies of raw materials and other key commodities.

 

respite

a short period of time when you are able to stop doing something that is difficult or unpleasant or when something difficult or unpleasant stops or is delayed

reverence

honor or respect that is felt for or shown to (someone or something)

In his own culture, an individual life is not treated with the same reverence and respect.

 

rhetoric

the art or skill of speaking or writing formally and effectively especially as a way to persuade or influence people

The elections are over, the rhetoric should stop, it’s time to go back to work.

 

rousing

causing great emotion, excitement, or enthusiasm

adj. 活泼的;使奋起的;使感动的

He went all over the country, rousing the workers and peasants for the struggle against oppression.

 

ruminate

to give serious and careful thought to

This is in part because real events can affect us in the real world, and in part because we tend to ruminate about the implications of real-world acts.

 

salutary

having a good or helpful result especially after something unpleasant has happened

One can only hope that the result will be an equally salutary debate

 

scatter

to cause to separate widely

sinister

smack

to have a trace, vestige, or suggestion

solicitous

somber

very sad and serious

Look at Berlin, where the bullet holes in the buildings and the somber stones and pillars near the Brandenburg Gate insist that we never forget our common humanity.

 

sophisticated

having a lot of experience and knowledge about the world

Charities will get something for nothing but will then pay for more sophisticated services.

 

sophistry

the use of reasoning or arguments that sound correct but are actually false

As he had a weak case and could not defend himself, he had to resort to sophistry.

 

soporific

causing a person to become tired and ready to fall asleep

The world gets news while we get the soporific message that even enxiety is good for you.

 

spiral

winding around a center or pole and gradually receding from or approaching it

done or said in a natural and often sudden way and without a lot of thought or planning

You describe it as "a stark portrait of where we are now".

 

steadfast

very devoted or loyal to a person, belief, or cause: not changing
