Professor

Today, we're going to discuss the ways in which companies can impact society. In your opinion, what is the best way for a company to have a positive impact on society?

Sarah

I believe that companies should focus on their own operations. While charitable giving can be beneficial, it is a temporary fix that doesn't address the root causes of serious social and environmental problems. By doing business in more responsible ways, companies can have a more meaningful and lasting impact on society. Not only that, but if they attract positive attention from consumers and increase their profits because of their actions they will inspire other companies to do the same. That's the only way we can really fix society.

John

I disagree with Sarah. While those are very good points, I think that companies should focus on charitable giving and philanthropy. Charitable giving can provide immediate relief to those in need and contribute to the overall well-being of society right away. It could take years or decades for business changes to have a positive impact on society, and most people just

can't wait that long. For instance, donating money to a school can help students learn more effectively almost immediately.

In my opinion, Sarah is right when she says that making profits is one of the main responsibilities of companies, so they should not focus on donating money to people in need.

While I acknowledge that theoretically the revenue of businesses generally is stabler than individuals and their profits may be considerable to some extent, I still insist that it is impractical and low-efficient for solving social issues. If all companies gave part of their profits or even revenues to others, they would have little money to construct new factories and recruit highly educated talents, which would slow down the development of the company or even the industry. Their revenue in turn might decline as well. By contrast, if companies focus on making profits, they will be more willing to allocate money to recruit people with great academic backgrounds and build well-equipped facilities, thereby developing more advanced technologies. In this case, companies can contribute more taxes to the authorities, which is the most effective way for the government to social issues. (171 words).

Based on the rubric, I would rate the following sample answer with a score of 4 out of 5.

While the response expresses a clear opinion, it does not make a meaningful contribution to the discussion as it diverges from the professor's prompt and Sarah and John's arguments.

The writer also does not provide any support or evidence to back up their opinion.

In terms of language use, the response contains several grammatical errors such as "the revenue of businesses generally is stabler" which should be "the revenue of businesses is generally more stable." Additionally, the use of "low-efficient" is not idiomatic and should be replaced with "inefficient." The writer also uses awkward phrasing such as "they would have little money to construct new factories and recruit highly educated talents" which could be revised to "they would have limited funds to invest in building new facilities and hiring skilled employees."
