Dr Gupta

Standardized testing is a method of evaluating student and teacher performance using tests that are administered and scored in a consistent, uniform manner. What do you think of the pros and cons of using standardized testing to evaluate students and teachers?

Tom

Standardized testing should not be used to evaluate students and teachers because they do not accurately measure the full range of a student's abilities or a teacher's effectiveness.

Students have different learning styles, and teachers have different teaching styles. Using a single test to evaluate them would be unfair and could lead to a narrow focus on test preparation rather than real learning.

Jerry

Admittedly, standardized testing is not a perfect measure of a student's abilities or a teacher's effectiveness. However, it can still be a valuable tool for evaluating both. It provides a common standard for comparison and helps identify areas where students and teachers may need additional support. For example, when I took the SAT, my score helped me gain admission to a college I might not have been able to attend otherwise.

It is true that like Jerry said standardized testing provides schools with a valuable metric to pinpoint areas for improvement. Otherwise, it would not have been widely recognized and promoted for so many years. However, in my opinion, standardized testing has glaring flaws.

It is very likely to underestimate students’ potential since a variety of factors, unfamiliarity with testing methods, test anxiety, and illness, just to name a few, will wreak havoc with how well a student performs. Moreover, this kind of tests may be biased against certain groups of students and spoil their chances of success. After all, those from low-income families cannot afford long hours of one-on-one tutoring, compared to their affluent peers. Therefore, I strongly recommend schools to take more things, such as student portfolios, into account when evaluating their performance and strive to minimize the negative impacts of standardized testing.

Based on the rubric, I would rate the following sample answer with a score of 4 out of 5.

Grammatical errors:

1. "It is very likely to underestimate students’ potential since a variety of factors" - missing comma after "potential"

2. "just to name a few, will wreak havoc with how well a student performs." - missing subject in the second part of the sentence, it should be "these factors will wreak havoc..."

3. "Moreover, this kind of tests" - it should be "these kinds of tests"

4. "may be biased against certain groups of students and spoil their chances of success." -missing verb tense agreement, it should be "may be biased against certain groups of students and may spoil their chances of success."
