I would give my friend two suggestions to improve his score.

First, my friend needs to find out exactly why his score is low. He should look over his past exams and find his mistakes. Then, he should consult the teacher about his weaknesses.

Then, once my friend knows his weaknesses, he should spend more time in studying those areas and improve his failings. After this he should look to other difficult areas and improve them as well.
