legislation

a law or set of laws made by a government

n. 立法;法律

They passed new state legislation this week.

 

legitimate

permitted by law

adj. 合法的

a legitimate [=legal, lawful] heir/government/business

 

legitimize

to make legal

v. 使..合法,正式批准

 

lenient

1 exerting a soothing or easing influence, relieving pain or stress 2.not harsh, severe, or strict

adj. 仁慈的,宽大的

Many people felt that the punishment was too lenient.

 

levy

an amount of money that must be paid and that is collected by a government or other authority

vt. 征收(税等);征集(兵等)

The government imposed a levy [=tax] on gasoline.

 

libelous

causing or intended to cause unjust injury to a person's good name

very clear and easy to understand

full of sadness or sorrow : very sad especially in an exaggerated or insincere way
