stir

to mix (something) by making circular movements in it with a spoon or similar object

vt. 搅拌;激起;惹起

Don't stir the milk until it creams.

 

striking

interesting and enough to attract attention

adj. 引人注目的,异乎寻常的,显著的

The clock was striking twelve.

 

subsequent

happening or coming after sth else

adj. 随后的,后来的

Neither the event producer nor the event itself participates in the determination of any subsequent execution processing.

 

substantiate

1 to gain full recognition or acceptance of; 2 to give evidence or testimony to the truth or factualness of; 3 to represent in visible form

v. 证实,使实体化

Paperwork would have to be provided to substantiate their losses—not easy years after the event.

 

substantive

real rather than apparent;firm

adj. 有实质的;大量的;真实的;独立存在的

They have something substantive to say and they are not afraid to say it in public.

 

subvert

1 : to secretly try to ruin or destroy a government, political system, etc.2 : to make (something) weaker or less effective

v. 颠覆;推翻;破坏

Shamefully, many charities even subvert their core principles so as to qualify for federal subsistence.

 

sympathetic

feeling or showing concern about someone who is in a bad situation : having or showing feelings of sympathy

adj. 同情的;交感神经的;共鸣的;赞同的

They were sympathetic, but could not do anything.

 

symptom

a change in the body or mind which indicates that a disease is present

n. [临床] 症状;征兆

Therefore, for every solution for a symptom, there should be one or more directives that contribute to the ultimate solution.

 

taciturn

tending to be quiet : not speaking frequently

adj. 沉默寡言的

My taciturn brother had become even more silent, as if he himself had turned into stone.

 

tangible

easily seen or recognized

adj. 有形的;切实的;可触摸的

So, if you want to designate anything it has to be by tangible things like pottery,particularly painted pottery,because it's easier to categorize.

 

taunt

to say insulting things to (someone) in order to make that person angry

n. 嘲弄;讥讽

She chose to consider this not as a taunt but as a serious question.

 

tawdry

having a cheap and ugly appearance

adj.俗丽的,华而不实的

Classic culture and art have been replaced by tawdry mystifications, exotic rites and vacation photos.

 

temperate

emotionally calm and controlled

adj. 温和的;适度的;有节制的

Perhaps a thousand of them live in one of the largest coastal temperate rain forests in the world.

 

tenacity

persistent determination

n. 固执;不屈不挠

Tenacity is one quality that marks them out.

 

tenuous

1 not certain, definite, or strong 2 very thin

adj. 纤细的,稀薄的,贫乏的

If our self respect is based on the praise of others then our self respect will be very tenuous.

 

tickle

to try to make (someone) laugh by lightly touching a very sensitive part of the body with your fingers, a feather, etc.

vt. 使发痒;使高兴;使满足

These rough sheets tickle.

 

toxic

containing poisonous substances

adj. 有毒的

The company dumped to toxic wastes into this canal.

 

tranquil

quiet and peaceful

adj.安静的

While many people claim that they thrive in high-stress environments, others work best in some place that is relaxing and tranquil.

 

transgression

the act of transgressing; the violation of a law or a duty or moral principle

n. [地质] 海侵;犯罪;违反;逸出

Capitalism, we should have remembered, involves at once prudent regulation and the imprudent transgression of old rules, the sharing of risks and the audacity to risk more successfully than others.

 

transitory

lasting only for a short time

adj. 短暂的,暂时的;瞬息的

In man transitory life attains its peak of animation, of soul power, so to speak.

 

trespass

to go on someone's land without permission

vi. 侵入;犯罪;打扰;冒犯

Seven people have been arrested as anti-nuclear protesters carried out a planned trespass at Hinkley Point.

 

tribute

a gift or service showing respect, gratitude, or affection

n. 贡品, 礼物, 颂词

America should regard their success as a tribute, not a threat, and celebrate in it.

 

trigger

to cause (something, such as an alarm) to start functioning

vt. 引发,引起;触发

With these functions, we can find out everything about the trigger or its context.

 

truncate

 to make (something) shorter

vt. 把…截短;缩短;使成平面

It doesn't truncate long messages and can handle Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat attachments as well as pictures--which now appear in color.

 

tuck

to put into a snug often concealing or isolating place

vt. 塞, 使隐藏

You tuck your secret away in an unexpected place, like an MP3 or a photo file, to conceal the fact you even shared any information at all.
