1 often observed or encountered; 2 occurring, done, produced, or appearing every day

adj. 平凡的,每日的

Train and plane spotting are regarded as eccentric precisely because they make a fetish of something quotidian.

 

rebuttal

the speech act of refuting by offering a contrary contention or argument

n. 反驳;辩驳;反证

The rebuttal to this actually takes an entire book to convey, but it first involves helping people understand that everything about talent is a process.

recant

to publicly say that you no longer have an opinion or belief that you once had

vt. 放弃;撤回

We should recant all opinions which are in conflict with those proclaimed by the central leadership.

 

reclusive

withdrawn from society; seeking solitude

adj. 隐居的;隐遁的

Another character, Vida Winter, is England's most famous reclusive writer, whose life story is coming to an end.

 

reconcile

to find a way of making (two different ideas, facts, etc.) exist or be true at the same time

v. 使一致;使和解;调停,调解

The teacher in charge of our class had to reconcile disputes among the students.

 

recondite

not understood or known by many people

adj. 深奥的;隐藏的

Monetary policy is the most recondite yet most pervasive and powerful of economic forces.

 

redundant

1 : repeating something else and therefore unnecessary; 2 : Brit : dismissed from a job because you are no longer needed

adj. 多余的,过剩的;被解雇的

This word is redundant, it can be left out.

 

reluctant

feeling or showing doubt about doing something : not willing or eager to do something

adj. 不情愿的;勉强的;顽抗的

The UK government has always been strangely reluctant to spell out what is expected from its people.

 

render

1 to give (something) over to the control or possession of another usually under duress; 2 to make an exact likeness of; 3 to give a representation or account of in words

v. 致使;给予补偿;提出

The entire world is trying to either undermine your authority or render you obsolete

 

resignation

the feeling that something unpleasant is going to happen and cannot be changed

n.放弃;顺从

The German government, a 31% stakeholder in the company, has already accepted his resignation.

 

resigned

receiving or enduring without offering resistance

adj. 顺从的

The three other teachers had resigned as well.

 

resolute

very determined : having or showing a lot of determination

adj. 坚决的;果断的

This is why Chinese leaders have been so resolute in their drive to lock up supplies of raw materials and other key commodities.

 

respite

a short period of time when you are able to stop doing something that is difficult or unpleasant or when something difficult or unpleasant stops or is delayed

n. 缓解;暂缓;暂时的休息;缓期执行

But if the laws were repealed tomorrow, most of the nations of the world would make no move to take advantage of the respite, and any that did would be in danger of finding their credit vanishing.

 

resurgence

a growth or increase that occurs after a period without growth or increase

n. 复活;再现;再起

A major significant failure of the resurgence of market-oriented policies was a failure to reform the monetary system.

 

revelation

the act or an instance of making known something previously unknown or concealed

n. 揭露,启示;被揭露的真相

So how do you decide? Well, you can give by reason or by revelation.

 

revere

to have great respect for (someone or something) : to show devotion and honor to (someone or something)

vt. 敬畏;尊敬;崇敬

To worship someone (or something) is to venerate him, her, or it – not necessarily as you would revere a deity, but at least with extreme devotion, love, or admiration.

 

reverence

honor or respect that is felt for or shown to (someone or something)

n. 崇敬;尊严;敬礼

In his own culture, an individual life is not treated with the same reverence and respect.

 

rhetoric

the art or skill of speaking or writing formally and effectively especially as a way to persuade or influence people

n. 修辞,修辞学;华丽的词藻

The elections are over, the rhetoric should stop, it’s time to go back to work.

 

rousing

causing great emotion, excitement, or enthusiasm

adj. 活泼的;使奋起的;使感动的

He went all over the country, rousing the workers and peasants for the struggle against oppression.

 

ruminate

to give serious and careful thought to

v. 沉思,反刍

This is in part because real events can affect us in the real world, and in part because we tend to ruminate about the implications of real-world acts.

 

salutary

having a good or helpful result especially after something unpleasant has happened

adj. 有益的,有用的;有益健康的

One can only hope that the result will be an equally salutary debate

 

scatter

to cause to separate widely

v/n. 使分散; 消散

But these are rounds that carry lots of little bombs which scatter over a big area.

 

scholarly

concerned with or relating to formal study or research

adj. 博学的

Even when I recall the trial, I can not remember what topics we selected for scholarly discussion.

 

scrutiny

the act of carefully examining something especially in a critical way : the act of scrutinizing something

n. 详细审查;监视

China's human rights record remains under scrutiny as the country prepares to host the summer's Olympics.

 

seditious

tending to excite political disorder or insurrection

adj. 煽动性的

My parents or children might be angered or even ashamed that I revealed such seditious tendencies

 

sensuous

1 of or relating to physical sensation or the senses; 2 pleasing to the physical senses

adj. 感觉上的

She is feminine, sensuous and would never take the lead

 

sentimental

a : marked or governed by feeling, sensibility, or emotional idealism b : resulting from feeling rather than reason or thought

adj. 伤感的;多愁善感的;感情用事的;寓有情感的

And the Egyptian people, as sentimental as any on earth, regarded their president’s heartbreak with deep sympathy.

 

serendipitous

lucky in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries

adj. 偶然发生的 侥幸得到的

We want to hear about your greatest travel moments, whether serendipitous or carefully planned

 

serendipity

luck that takes the form of finding valuable or pleasant things that are not looked for

n. 意外发现珍奇事物的本领

When people come together in physical environments, they also shape the potential for much greater serendipity.

 

serene

calm and peaceful

adj.安宁的

And while we reach for our goals or follow our passions we still maintain that inner sense of balance that keeps us sane and serene.

 

shaft

a long rod or pole (especially the handle of an implement or the body of a weapon like a spear or arrow)

His new office was a 6-by-9-foot basement box with a window on an air shaft.

 

shudder

tremble,shiver, quiver

The bombing campaign against Serbia is still recalled with a shudder by American air-force commanders.

 

shun

to avoid (someone or something)

vt. 避开,避免;回避

Possibly, ageing natives in rich countries might do more of the jobs that they now shun.

 

simultaneous

existing or occurring at the same time

adj. 同时的, 同时发生的

The conference hall is provided with facilities for simultaneous interpretation in five languages.

 

sinister

having an evil appearance : looking likely to cause something bad, harmful, or dangerous to happen

adj. 阴险的;凶兆的;灾难性的;左边的

Mr Levy said there was nothing sinister about his application, which is still available outside France.

 

smack

to have a trace, vestige, or suggestion

v. 用掌击;带有…风味

I don't smack them, but I sometimes think I should, because the elder two have so much attitude.

 

smug

having or showing the annoying quality of people who feel very pleased or satisfied with their abilities, achievements, etc.

adj. 自鸣得意的;自以为是的;整洁的

Not to be smug, but the Irish need a reason to celebrate this year.

 

solicitous

1 given to or made with heedful anticipation of the needs and happiness of others; 2 showing urgent desire or interest

adj. 热心的,挂念的;热切期望的

Picture an encounter between two people who both intend to create a harmonious relationship, but one perceives the other's solicitous, polite--even generous--behavior as imposing.

 

somber

very sad and serious

adj. 忧郁的;昏暗的;严峻的;阴天的

Look at Berlin, where the bullet holes in the buildings and the somber stones and pillars near the Brandenburg Gate insist that we never forget our common humanity.

 

sophisticated

having a lot of experience and knowledge about the world

adj. 老练的

Charities will get something for nothing but will then pay for more sophisticated services.

 

sophistry

the use of reasoning or arguments that sound correct but are actually false

n. 诡辩;诡辩法

As he had a weak case and could not defend himself, he had to resort to sophistry.

 

soporific

causing a person to become tired and ready to fall asleep

adj. 催眠的;想睡的

The world gets news while we get the soporific message that even enxiety is good for you.

 

spiral

winding around a center or pole and gradually receding from or approaching it

adj. 螺旋形的;盘旋的

He doesn't see a replacement source of higher profits on the horizon to break the spiral.

 

spontaneous

done or said in a natural and often sudden way and without a lot of thought or planning

adj. 自发的;自然的;无意识的

That tells us whether the change is spontaneous.

 

stark

(1)rigid in or as if in death;(2)barren, desolate

adj. 僵硬的;荒凉的

You describe it as "a stark portrait of where we are now".

 

steadfast

very devoted or loyal to a person, belief, or cause: not changing

adj. 坚定的

Our nation is strong and steadfast.
