　　In some countries, the number of people choosing to live by themselves has increased rapidly in recent years. Why is this the case? Is it a positive or negative development for the society?

　　Over the past few years, the size of families has decreased in some countries, with more and more people choosing to live by themselves. I think the main reasons for this trend are due to economic and social progresses.

　　It was common in the past that several generations lived under the same roof and this could save living expense and strengthen family cohesion. As people's living standard improves, they can afford to buy or rent a house, allowing them to live on their own. Another typical reason is the high mobility of population in the modern society. Thanks to the convenient transport and telecommunication, people can move more frequently than before, which contributes to the separation of family members.

　　This life pattern helps the younger generation to become more independent and some possible problems that may occur in those large families can be avoided. People can enjoy more personal space, without worrying that their lifestyles may confliet with those of other family members. However, as the structure of the family changes, the bond of family members may become weak. Elderly people need love and care, which are hard to acquire, as their adult children may live in other cities. Therefore, the lack of companionship and feeling a sense of isolation are very common among the aged population. Also, young people who live alone have to cover the living cost and cope with difficulties by themselves, leading to extra stress in life and at work.

　　Overall, living by themselves gives people more privacy and freedom, but this pattern may cause some social problems.
