Question

Some people like to specifically plan how they will spend their free time.Others prefer to keep their free time open and not schedule activities in advance.Which do you prefer and why?

范文:

Guess I am a person who needs to have a schedule in advance for my leisure timebecause I like the feeling of being in control and have to know what to do next. Ifthere is no plan, I will probably just sleep for a whole day and do nothing. The timewasted could have been spent on something more meaningful, like doing sports, meeting friends and learning a new skill.

What's more, planning everything ahead of time for holidays can also help peoplesave a lot of money. As we all know, booking a plane ticket last minute can be quiteexpensive, but doing it at least a month ahead may help get a discount.

范文:

In the reading, the university decides to require students to finish 10 hours ofvolunteer work in the local community before their graduation. First, this will not only help the communities, but also benefit students.Second, it' s very convenientfor students to work locally.

In the conversation, however, the woman disagrees with this idea. She believes thatmaking a mandatory requirement will cause resentment and not inspire students tovolunteer more.Even though students will finish the 10-hour work, they will probably not willing to do any other voluntary job.In addition, most organizationsthat need student volunteers are not within walking distance, like the park that needs volunteers to clean the' area. A lot of students don't have cars and there is nopublic transportation for them to get there.

An ecosystem is a local environment with its complex community of organismsfunctioning together as a unit. An ecosystem can be damaged by natural disasters or by human activity. If the ecosystem has a limited variety of species, then destroying even one species of plant or animal can change the ecosystem forever. A resilient ecosystem, however, is able to restore itself toits original, pre-disturbance condition. Resilience in an ecosystem is possiblewhen the ecosystem is populated by a large variety of species: if one speciesis eliminated by a disturbance, other species are able to take the place of thatspecies, which allows the ecosystem to avoid long-term change.

Listening:

Question Using the coral reef as an example, explain what it means for anecosystem to be resilient.

范文:

The reading is about Ecosystem Resilience, which means that when an ecosystemhas a large variety of species: if one species is eliminated by a disturbance, otherspecies are able to take the place of that species, which allows the ecosystem toavoid long-term change.

In the lecture, the professor gives an example to explain this. Several years ago, there was a healthy coral reef in the Pacific Ocean along with a huge variety of fishand plants. But once, the sea water was polluted by a large amount of diesel fuel spilt by a ship. Because of the pollution, a species of fish that ate a plant called algae, died out. Without this fish, there would be too much algae, which would be very badto coral. Fortunately, other species took over the place of that fish which wentextinct and there was no harm to the coral reef.

Question:

The students discuss two possible solutions to the man's problem. Brieflysummarize the problem. Then state which solution you recommend and explainwhy.

范文:

The problem is that the man wants to go to the Career Fair next Wednesday, but heis scheduled to work in the restaurant at the same time. There are two solutions.First, he can switch the hours with his co-worker. Second is to stop by the Career Fairfor a few minutes before work.

In my opinion, he should go for the first solution. If the man only goes to the CareerFair for a short time at the beginning, he will just meet some representatives of acertain number of companies. What if the best company just shows up after he leaves? He will definitely be very regretful to miss the chance. In terms of switchingworking hours, I think what the man can do is to explain the whole thing very carefully to his co-worker and boss, I guess they will understand him and do him thisfavour. In this way, probably no one is going to be mad at him or think he is quitetroublesome.

Some baby monkeys were only fed by cloth mother and otherswere only fed by wire mother. Except the feeding time, all of the baby monkeysspent most of their time with the cloth mother.
