hedge

1. a fence or boundary formed by closely growing bushes

2. a way of protecting oneself against financial loss or other adverse circumstances

She invests her money as a hedge against inflation.

 

herbivore

an animal that only eats plants

herbivorous animals

 

heritage

the traditions, achievements, beliefs, etc., that are part of the history of a group or nation

His Polish heritage was very important to him.

 

heyday

the period of one's greatest popularity, vigor, or prosperity

In the heyday of big cars nobody cared how much gas cost.

 

hideous

offensive to the senses and especially to sight : exceedingly ugly;morally offensive : shocking

adj. 骇人听闻的, 可怕的

The room was filled with hideous furniture.

 

hinder

to make (something, such as a task or action) slow or difficult

v. 阻碍

Their journey was hindered [=impeded, slowed] by snow and high winds.

 

hindrance

a person or thing that makes a situation difficult : a person or thing that hinders someone or something

n. 障碍;妨碍;妨害;阻碍物

She wanted to sign up for the class, but the cost was a hindrance. [=the class cost too much]

 

hindsight

the knowledge and understanding that you have about an event only after it has happened

n. 后见之明;枪的照门

It's easy for us to say that the war was wrong, but we have the advantage/benefit of hindsight.

 

hinge

a usually metal piece that attaches a door, gate, or cover to something and allows it to open and close

n. 铰链,折叶

 

hodgepodge

a heterogeneous mixture

a hodgepodge of styles

 

holistic

relating to or concerned with complete systems rather than with individual parts

adj. 整体的;全盘的

Holistic medicine attempts to treat both the mind and the body.

 

hone

(1)to sharpen or smooth with a whetstone(2)to improve your skill at doing something

She honed her language skills by reading and writing every day.

 

hover

 to be in a state of uncertainty, irresolution, or suspense

humble

not costly or luxurious

adj. 谦逊的

hypocrisy

the behavior of people who do things that they tell other people not to do : behavior that does not agree with what someone claims to believe or feel

When his private letters were made public, they revealed his hypocrisy.

 

iconoclast

a person who criticizes or opposes beliefs and practices that are widely accepted

n. 偶像破坏者;提倡打破旧习的人

The iconoclasm of his views made him unpopular.

 

identical

being the exact same one; not any other

adj. 同一的;完全相同的

We visited the identical place we stopped at last year

 

ignorance

a lack of knowledge, understanding, or education the state of being ignorant

His racist attitudes were born out of ignorance.

 

illicit

not allowed by law : unlawful or illegal

adj. 违法的;不正当的

He was arrested for selling illicit copies of the software.

 

illustrate

to give examples in order to make (something) easier to understand

v. 阐明,解释

He illustrated his lecture with stories of his own experiences in the field.

 

illustrious

standing above others in rank, importance, or achievement

adj. 的,杰出的,辉煌的

He has had an illustrious military career.

 

immune

1 not capable of being affected by a disease; 2 not influenced or affected by something; 3 having special protection from something that is required for most people by law

adj. 免疫的,免除的,免于…

Most people are immune to the disease.

 

immunity

the quality of being unaffected by something

n. 免责;不受影响

They have developed immunity to the virus.

 

impartial

treating all people and groups equally : not partial or biased

adj. 公平的,公正的;不偏不倚的

an impartial analysis of the case

 

impeccable

free from fault or error

adj. 无瑕疵的;没有缺点的

The craftsmanship is impeccable. [=flawless]

 

impediment

something that makes it difficult to do or complete something : something that interferes with movement or progress

n. 口吃;妨碍;阻止

There were no legal impediments to the deal.

 

impersonal

showing no interest in individual people:lacking emotional warmth

adj. 冷漠的

a giant impersonal corporation

 

imperturbable

very calm : very hard to disturb or upset

adj. 冷静的;泰然自若的

Although he seems outwardly imperturbable, he can get very angry at times.

 

implausible

not believable or realistic : not plausible

adj. 难以置信的,不像真实的

She's been making implausible claims.
