Most school students nowadays are required to learn History as part of their studies, yet there still has been a debate over the content of this subject. Personally, I consider it short-sighted that greater significance should be attached to local history rather than world history.

It is understandable that so many people think learning local history is more important. This is mainly because it facilitates youngsters to shape a strong sense of national identity. Such is human nature that people tend to gravitate to novelty, so it is a commonplace that individuals, especially youngsters, are more likely to be attracted by exotic cultures instead of domestic ones that are often regarded as clichéd. Naturally, the influences of their own cultures will be undermined. To avoid local cultures from withering away, history about their motherland ought to be emphasised on school syllabuses, as history is closely bound up with the cultural legacies which allow students to build cultural confidence of their own nation.

However, world history should be equally focused on as local history does in this increasingly globalised world, as the latter teaches students how their mother country is distinct from other lands and allows them to celebrate their own cultural brilliance, while the former enables them to gain a glimpse into diverse historical and cultural customs and thus creates mutual understanding among people with different cultural backgrounds. In other words, equipped with the knowledge regarding world history, students will be able to not only quickly adapt to their future study and work in a global scale and ponder issues from global perspectives but also contribute to eliminating the tension caused by cultural bias or misunderstanding in world affairs.
