It has long been a problem that younger generations are more fascinated by celebrities in vanity fair than those historic figures in text books. To me, it seems to be a symptom of a trouble to which the media and schools are the answers. 

The primary culprit of this phenomenon is the misleading effect of modern media. Living in a material world today, the youth are inundated with ubiquitous coverages of pop and movie stars the world over, particularly those sensational gossips and scandals online to increase ratings. As a result, exposed to these reports for a long time, young minds are unconsciously distracted by or even get addicted to those low-quality stories.

But the problem is not the consequence of just media, the education of schools should be another reason to blame. If more adolescents prefer stars in magazine covers to the heroes in history books, chances are the education model in schools is not attractive enough for students.

However, it is not the moment to be pessimistic for the problem, while there are some practical solutions to curb this trend. Firstly, the government can have a role to play, by initiating regulations to prohibit media from over publicizing news of entertainment. In contrast, more documentaries on history and culture should be encouraged to be broadcasted more frequently. Also, schools could arrange more tours to historical museums, while teachers should share more anecdotes of historical figures in lectures, thus cultivate young students’ interests in history of their country.

If these measures could be implemented, I would say the young minds would be reversed from their infatuation of modern idols. With the concerted efforts by government, media and reformed education method, a poem by Dylan Thomas could be as popular as the gossip of Beckham’ divorce.
