　　Some people think getting old is entirely bad. However, others think that life of the elderly in modem world is much easier than in the past. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

　　In many countries, the proportion of the old is increasing steadily. While some people claim it is tough for elderly people to lead a life in modern society, I tend to hold a different opinion.

　　People today can expect to live a longer and healthier life than people in the past because of the advancement in medical care. As people reach their twilight years, they will face increasing health problems and this puts huge pressure on welfare system of a country and many other social programs. But in most nations today, governments have managed to pay for a bigger proportion of the costs of health care and offer better pension plans, all of which means that life is getting easier for the old.

　　People used to see getting old as a time for retirement, but today elderly people are able to be more involved in contributing actively to their communities, whether it means working part time as mentors or doing voluntary work in different organizations. Thus, senior citizens are granted the chance to lead a more socially meaningful life instead of staying at home feeling less used like before.

　　It is true that some elderly people may suffer from loneliness for living by themselves. However, modern society offers them places such as nursing homes. Leading a life there, they have more opportunities to communicate with their peers, keep each other's company and receive medical treatment from professional doctors. This is especially good for those in poor health, as they could have regular medical check-ups and diet prepared by dieticians to meet their individual requirements.

　　To conclude, as life expectancy improves, many more countries have a higher opinion about the old and have created desirable conditions for them to lead a more satisfying life.
