　　Some people think that the government should decide the subject for students to study in university. Others believe that students should be allowed to apply for the subject they prefer. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

　　The main function of university is to provide students with good education and train them to be useful members of the society. Some people think, to make education better serve the country, the government should decide what subjects students should study in university.

　　According to this viewpoint, the government's arrangement can ensure sufficient supply of human resources for the society and avoid students' choosing subjects blindly. For example, the number of enrolment in science subjects declines in recent years because students are keen on learning practical subjects that are more useful in employment. However, this trend may adversely affect the research of basic science, and therefore, it is reasonable for the government to move some students from practical subjects to science subjects.

　　However, some people argue that choosing the major subject is a personal decision and the governmenfs intervention is unjustified As the government does not know students' characteristics, it is less likely to match every student with his or her favorable subject Some students may end up in a major subject that they dislike or they are not interested in. This is a waste of people's talents, as they may lose their passion and perform poorly in their studies. Therefore, it is important for students to make their own decisions when applying for admission to university.

　　In my view, only when individuals choose the suitable subjects, can they fully develop their potential and then make greater contribution to the society. I do not object to the government's being involved in setting the enrolment of different subjects, but it is the students who can decide what they should study in university.
