I remember long time ago, my friends and I went to NY and then drove to the Amish Village in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, which took us about 3hours. We went there because we had always heard about how Amish people don’t use electricity and we wanted to find out if that is true or not.
The Amish people are a group of traditional Christians from Europe. They are known for simple living, plain dress, peaceful, and not using any modern technology. They are also 100 percent family oriented, prefer face-to-face conversations whenever possible, and constantly try to maintain self-sufficiency. The Amish value rural life, manual labor, humility and this is how we heard that some Amish villages today don’t even have electricity and they want to do everything manually, which means no machines.
So we got there and took a guided tour of an authentic 1840's Amish farmhouse and learned about their lifestyle. Then, after the farmhouse tour, we explored the town bit and rode the horse buggy. While having dinner there, we mingled with the locals and they are quite friendly. We asked them a lot of questions about how they perceive our modern lifestyle. Then the evening came, it is true that there was very little light in the town. So we decided not to spend the night there and drove back to NY under darkness.
It was a very interesting tour but I probably wouldn’t be able to accept a life without electricity.
