I have been to many interesting cities before and it is hard to say which one is more interesting than others. But if I had to choose one off the top of my head, I would say Marseille.
Marseille, which is located in South France on the coast of the Mediterranean, is the 2nd largest city in France. It has the biggest harbor and oldest trading center in Europe. I had only been to France once before and I mostly stayed in Paris because that is what any first-time tourists would do. Then some locals recommended me to check out south France as it is not as touristy as Paris.
So I decided to do some research and found out that the city is most famous for old churches and cathedrals. Also, there is a little island off the coast of Marseille that houses a place called Château d'If which was a fortress and former prison that supposedly inspired Alexandre Dumas's adventure novel The Count of Monte Cristo which is also one of my all-time favorites.
So last time I decided to fly to Paris first then hopped on a train directly to Marseille. It took me about four hours to get there and I stayed for three days. I thought the sightseeing was decent but not fantastic because some part of the city felt a little dangerous and dirty. However, the seafood is quite amazing and locals are super friendly. So, I definitely had a great time.
