A city needs its landmarks, whether in constructions, in history or in food. What impressed me most when I traveled to Montreal with myparents last November were its culture of all backgrounds reflecting mainly off its buildings as well as its food.
One day we were walking in the street of St. Catherine and confronted a building dating back possibly to 200 years ago. It was a restaurant, serving local and traditional food. We asked the waiter what was special in their restaurant and he said we must try their Poutine, which of course we had no idea about. But we decided to try our luck and ordered one portion.
When it was served to our table, we found it was just fried chips covered with some sort of sauce. It might be cheese sauce as it looked white. And yellow chips and white sauce made an uncomfortable match in the plate. It felt funny too. How could a plate of chips cost us 9.10 Canadian dollars? I wanted to return it and complained about it, but the nice small of it dragged me back to my seat right when I stood up. Getting myself together, I reached my fork out, got one chip, and inserted it into my mouth. Miraculously, it tasted good, not oily, not disgusting, not gross, but good. Then what happened next? Me and my parents finished the Poutine within 5 minutes.
That might be why we said we couldn’t judge a food by its appearance.
