“People in IT are notorious for having high level technical skills, but not getting along withpeople so well. They tend to lack certain skills, particularly social abilities.”

“IT 行业的人的专业技术很高是众所周知的，而同样众人皆知的是他们不善于与人相处。他们往往缺乏某种技能，尤其是社交能力。”

 

I used to think that such statements were a negative stereotype of the “computer nerd.” I believed that emotional intelligence (EQ) and IQ were essentially independent.

我原本以为这是对“电脑呆子”进行否定的老套说法。我认为情商和智商基本上是独立的东西。

 

Some university professors argue that at the high end of the IQ scale, there is often a lack of social skills. They say that the smarter the IT people are, very often the less competent they are emotionally and in interpersonal relationships, as if the IQ is strengthened at the expense of EQ.

An interest in technical work often demands long hours working alone, often beginning in childhood or the early teen years. This is a period of life when people learn vital social skills from interacting with friends. Selfselection plays a part. People who are attracted to computer science or engineering are sometimes attracted in part because they don’t have to deal with emotions. Thus, nerds are drawn to such fields. They can be reclusive, get bywith few social graces, as long as they do well in their work.

对技术工作感兴趣经常要求长时间一个人工作，而且这种兴趣一般从童年时代或者十几岁就开始了。而这个时期是人们通过与朋友的交往学会重要的社交技巧的时期。自我选择很重要，有些人之所以对计算机科学和工程学感兴趣，部分原因是他们不用跟感情打交道，所以，一些呆子就这样被这些领域吸引住了。他们可以躲进小楼自成一统，管它社交与风度，只要在工作中表现出色就行了。

 

This does not mean that all high-IQ scientists are socially incompetent. It does mean that emotional intelligence abilities will pay off more in fields where the pool of impressivemanagers—people with both high science skills and high social skills—is small.

这并不意味着所有高智商的科学家都没有社交能力。它意味着在一些出类拔萃的经理——他们的专业能力和社交能力都极强——很少的领域，情商越能发挥作用。

 

In the 1950s, eighty science Ph.D. students were given IQ and personality tests, and were evaluated on such qualities as emotional balance and maturity, integrity, and interpersonal skills.

Forty years later, estimates were made of each person’s career success on the basis ofresumes and evaluations by experts in their own field. The result was that EQ was about four times more important than IQ in determining professional success and prestige.

As Ernest O. Lawrence, the Nobel Prize winner, put it, “In scientific work, excellence is not about technical competence, but character.”
