Professor

Life expectancies are increasing all over the world nowadays. Some of you probably know someone who is more than 100 years old. Before our next class, I want you to consider the following question:

What factors do you think have contributed to the increase in life expectancy? Is it due to advances in medical technology, improvements in public health, changes in lifestyle habits, or something else entirely?

Lisa

I think the main reason why people are living longer nowadays is recent advances in medical technology. Modern medicine has enabled us to better treat and manage chronic illnesses, and there have been major breakthroughs in areas such as cancer treatment and organ transplantation. As a result, people are able to live longer with diseases that may have been fatal in the past.

John

While medical technology has certainly played a role, I think improvements in public health have been just as important. We now have access to clean drinking water, sanitation systems, and vaccines that have dramatically reduced the incidence of infectious diseases.

Even a century ago, people didn't have access to any of these things. Additionally, public health campaigns have helped educate people about healthy lifestyle habits such as exercise, healthy eating, and not smoking, which can also contribute to longer lifespans.

I would like to support Lisa’s idea that the unprecedented advancement in medical technology during the past decades has considerably accounted for the increasing longevity of modern people. Although the studies in lethal diseases like cancer still has a long way to go, it is likely that many of them are about to be overcome. In addition to the progress in medical technology, the improvement of health consciousness among the masses is a pivotal factor for the rise in average life expectancy. Fully aware of the significance of regular health examination, a large percentage of modern people are habituated to arrange for themselves and their families a complete physical exam at least once a year so that most potential illnesses could be detected early. Meanwhile, doing sports like jogging and boxing has now enjoyed a higher popularity among the public who wish to keep fit. Proven by a vast number of them, such a habit has indeed prevented them from illnesses related to overweight. To my thinking, these changes have to some extent explained the longer lifespan of people today.

Based on the rubric, I would rate the following sample answer with a score of 4 out of 5.

In the sentence "Although the studies in lethal diseases like cancer still has a long way to go," the subject-verb agreement is incorrect (studies should be plural, and have should be used instead of has). Additionally, in the sentence "Meanwhile, doing sports like jogging and boxing has now enjoyed a higher popularity among the public who wish to keep fit," the phrase "doing sports" should be replaced with "participating in sports" to sound more natural in English.
